The skateboard used by Marty McFly in the first film of the trilogy has become an iconic collector’s item. With its black and fuchsia design accented by yellow splashes, the Valterra is instantly recognizable. In 2025, Madrid Skateboards will release an enhanced reissue that stays truer than ever to the original.
The History of the Board in the Film
According to sources, three or four original skateboards were used during filming, and one of them remains in the hands of Jerry Madrid, founder of Madrid Skateboards. The original board differs in certain details from modern reissues, sparking debates among collectors and skaters alike.
Differences and Fixes in the 2025 Reissue
Trucks: From a Production Fix to Historical Accuracy
For production reasons, Back to the Future used Tracker Trucks instead of Underground Trucks (Jerry Madrid’s brand), which weren’t yet ready. To disguise them, the trucks were painted black. However, past reissues never included Tracker Trucks but instead featured Cadillac Trucks, an evolution of the original design.
The 2025 version corrects a key issue from previous reissues, where the trucks were too wide. The new mold now matches the exact width of the film’s version. Additionally, this edition includes 0.5-inch black risers for improved accuracy.
Wheels: The True “Fly Wheel” Returns
One of the biggest flaws in past reissues was the wheels—too small and incorrectly shaped. For 2025, Madrid has created new molds based on an original 1980s Fly Wheel, restoring the correct 62mm diameter for an authentic look and feel, just like in the movie.
Design & Sticker Placement
To distinguish this new release from earlier reissues, the grip tape orientation has been corrected, and some stickers have been repositioned to their original placement, including the horizontal “Madrid” logo on the top.
