In 1986, jumps were all the rage. They were easy to build, portable, and fun to use. Unfortunately, the boards were breaking left and right.
Powell-Peralta explored various methods to make the boards stronger and more resistant to breakage.
One solution was the Bonite construction. Another was the "Gee-Gaw" shape, which featured protrusions to reinforce the breakage-prone areas.
Why "Gee-Gaw"? Ask Chris Iverson. This shape was also used for the Ripper deck graphic. They were produced between 1987 and 1988.
The Rodriguez "Skull & Sword" deck was the first pro skater graphic produced by Powell-Peralta. The graphic was conceived by Ray and illustrated by V.C. Johnson, with art direction by George Powell in 1979.
